A federal judge in Texas has put a halt to a controversial new state law that would have empowered local law enforcement to arrest individuals suspected of crossing the border illegally. The Justice Department, joined by the ACLU, challenged the legislation, arguing that immigration enforcement is a federal prerogative. The ruling by Judge David Ezra is seen as a victory for immigrant rights groups, preventing the law from taking effect next week.
