Spirit Airlines Challenges Proposed JetBlue-United Alliance, Citing Antitrust Concerns

Spirit Airlines has formally objected to a proposed alliance between JetBlue and United Airlines, urging the Department of Transportation to extend its review of the deal and allow for greater public scrutiny.

In its complaint, Spirit argues that the partnership could harm competition and mirrors a previously attempted alliance between JetBlue and American Airlines — a deal that was struck down in 2023 by a federal judge for violating antitrust laws.

“The proposed agreement raises serious concerns about reduced competition, higher fares, and fewer choices for consumers,” Spirit said in a statement. “We believe the public deserves more time and transparency. . .
