Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr., a 60-year-old anesthesiologist, has been sentenced to 190 years in federal prison for tampering with intravenous (IV) bags at a surgical center, leading to the death of a colleague and multiple cardiac emergencies among patients.
Between May and August 2022, several patients at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas experienced unexpected cardiac emergencies during routine surgeries. Investigations revealed that these incidents coincided with Dr. Ortiz's shifts. Surveillance footage showed him placing IV bags into a warmer outside operating rooms shortly before the emergencies occurred.
