U.S. Supreme Court Upholds South Carolina Congressional Redistricting in Gerrymandering Case

The U.S. Supreme Court today sides with Republicans in a contentious dispute over alleged racial gerrymandering in South Carolina. The ruling upholds the boundaries of Congressional District One, which a lower court previously invalidated, claiming they were drawn based on racial demographics.

In its decision, the Supreme Court concludes that civil rights advocates did not sufficiently prove that race was a predominant factor in the redistricting process. Instead, the court finds that GOP mapmakers primarily used political affiliation to redraw the district lines, a practice that is legally permissible. . .
