In a heated exchange on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), U.S. Vice President JD Vance and journalist Mehdi Hasan sparred over issues of free speech and press freedom. The confrontation began when Hasan criticized the White House's decision to ban the Associated Press (AP) from press briefings due to its refusal to adopt the administration's preferred term "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico."
