California Toy Stores Face Fines for Lack of Gender-Neutral Sections

California retailers that sell toys will soon be required by law to offer a gender-neutral section or face fines. This new legislation, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2021, takes effect on January 1, 2024.

The law mandates that department stores with 500 or more employees must provide a dedicated space for toys that are not marketed specifically toward boys or girls. This aims to promote inclusivity and combat gender stereotypes often associated with traditional toy categories.
