Speaker Johnson Declares War Powers Act Unconstitutional Amid Iran Tensions

House Speaker Mike Johnson is challenging the legality of the War Powers Act, calling the 1973 law unconstitutional as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle attempt to rein in President Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran.

The War Powers Act was enacted in the wake of the Vietnam War to limit a president's ability to engage in hostilities without congressional approval. But Speaker Johnson is now asserting that the law itself exceeds constitutional boundaries by encroaching on the president's role as commander-in-chief.
